Ernest Hemingway's writing style
My dad just read us an Ernest Hemingway short story. It was the first one I've read of his and I enjoyed the story, but what really struck me was his writing style. I liked how the sentences were short and to-the-point. He conveyed what he wanted to convey but without over describing. I got a good image in my head of the setting and characters from the short descriptions. I think authors can sometimes over-describe a certain scene or setting and it takes away from what they're trying to say. Another thing I enjoyed about Ernest Hemingway's writing style is his use of repetitions. For example:
"Where do you come from?" I asked him.
"From San Carlos," he said, and smiled.
That was his native town and so it gave him pleasure to mention it and he smiled.
I'm looking forward to reading more of his short stories soon!
